Previewing Misfits vs. Cloud 9

Overwatch Contenders season 1 is starting this weekend and I wanted to take a close look at the more interesting match happening week 1.

Roster shuffles aplenty.

Roster shuffles aplenty.

Cloud 9 and Misfits have both had an interesting week when it comes to their respective rosters. With Misfits losing a DPS player in Nevix to the newly formed C9, and Cloud 9 for lack of a better term, replacing their entire NA roster. Misfits picked themselves up and didn't go down the drain, picking up excellent talent in Cwoosh, Logix and Zuppehw.

Misfits had a disappointing season 0 for Contenders, losing 0-3 to Bazooka Puppiez in an off stream match and getting booted out of the playoffs early. They have been known as a team that lives and dies by the prosperity of their star player Tviq and the match against Bazooka puppies did not do much to disabuse people of that notion. Misfits does have a lot of holes in their game, not just the basic ones most teams have like ult management.

The biggest problem I've seen with Misfits is with their positioning. Positioning is important in every sport, if you aren't there to make an impact, you will never be successful. Misfits had some of the worst positioning in the teams that made it to the playoffs of season 0, often costing them team fights.

To be fair to Misfits, they were running a triple DPS composition a good amount of the time, which could prevent deeper dives without the D.Va to defend you while you do the damage. Even still, you can see many instances where Misfits are losing fights they should be winning. Coming into week 1 you can only hope they shore up their defenses.

On the other side you have Cloud 9, or the newly formed Cloud 9 EU, Laser Kittenz in disguise as I like to call them. After falling just short of making the playoffs of Contenders season 0, Cloud 9 picked up the excellent Laser Kittenz roster and moved their Overwatch operations to the Europe side of things. They also made some changes to the LK roster, stealing the DPS player from their very opponent, Misfits.

All the good roster changes doesn't mean the new Cloud 9 has no problems. Chief among them being their defense, especially in prolonged team fights. At some point, they look like the strongest offensive team in the world, an then it comes to defense and they get steamrolled. In example...

These are fixable problems for both teams, with Contenders season 1 starting they will both have time to batten down the hatches and give their best shot at taking the title from EUnited.
